.: Rules :. |
- Don't skim these rules. They are not just basic RPG rules. Read and understand them before you post your bio, or you will get something wrong and we will land on you with both feet because we are sick and tired of having to tell people what they screwed up in their bio because they didn't bother to read the rules. This and the bio rules are everything you need to know to play here. There are things about DEM that are different from all the other games. We didn't put these rules up because we loooove to type long boring lists. We trying to help you.
- Also read the Bio Rules. And do read the FAQ as well.
- Two words: play. nice. Argument, insult, refusal to follow rules, mod-baiting, and any other such drama or nonsense will not be tolerated. You will treat the moderator and other players with respect at all times. Even minor offenses will not go igonred. Disciplinary actions can include, depending on the seriousness and/or repetition of the behavior, less-than-gentle reminders to behave from DEM staff, meetings with the staff, suspensions, and banning. Disciplinary actions are not open for discussion, and argument will be looked on as further violation and disrespect for the moderators. All staff members are capable of any action, up to suspension; none have to wait for the admin before doing so, and their right to discipline or even remove players as they see fit will be respected by the other staff members, including the admin. Permanent bans (with the exception of listed actions that automatically require banning--see rules in red) will involve full staff, and may not be exercised by any individual staff member, even the admin. We select staff carefully and take keeping order very seriously here.
- Copyright and terms of use: canonical characters are property of Marvel, we aren't making any money from this, etc. All writings on this board, including character bios and especially original characters, are property of the individual authors, and may not be used outside of DEM by anyone except the authors.
- If you register on DEM, you should do so with the intention to post a bio immediately. Otherwise your account will be deleted after a few days.
- If you have not yet been accepted, do not post to the board unless you are submitting a bio (in the Applications forum), or asking a question (in the Questions forum). Those are the only forums you are allowed access to if you are not yet a DEM player. If you do post anywhere else, it will be deleted and you will be reminded of the rules. This rule should also apply to the chat room for DEM chat nights. It isn't that we don't want you to join in, it's that it's awkward for us to have someone who might not be accepted participating in our regular chit-chat.
- All bios must be completely filled in this format and all guidelines in the bio rules must be followed or they will not be accepted.
- Do not post an incomplete bio as a work in progress. You would not apply for a job by turning in half a resume and coming back the following week to complete it. If you cannot finish a character bio in the ten days you may hold a reservation, then you do not have the time to play here.
- Do not plagiarize your bio from other sources. If we discover that you have, we will reject it and ban you for stealing someone else's work.
- Characters may begin with team affiliations, but only after getting full permission from the player of the team leader (ie, can't join the Brotherhood unless Magneto's player says it's alright). Rescuing and recruiting is very tiresome, so at this point it is perfectly fine to start off as if you've just arrived and are settling into life in the mansion. If you have a canon character, it is permissible to play them as if they were once a team member but dropped out and are returning. But obviously your character can't have been there all along or else people would have noticed. You'll have to make something up about where they've been this whole time.
- You may not play a character that is in all ways similiar to the character you would like to have but cannot (ie, Wovlerine is taken so your character somehow has an adamantium skeleton). Too bad you didn't get the character you wanted. It's not fair to the person playing that character if you are allowed to have a carbon copy of it. The rule against copycat characters also applies to canonical clones. Sorry, no Goblin Queen.
- You may not play the long lost child/sibling/parent of an existing character unless you have permission from the player of that character, or have been requested to by that player. If the character you wish to play child/sibling/parent to is not currently being played, you absolutely may not use them. The only exception is canon characters who are defined as being related to another canon character. If Havok were to come in and Cyclops was not being played, it would be permissible to play Havok as having a brother that is mentioned, but not in game. If Cyclops was being played, and someone wished to play Havok, I would expect Havok's player to touch base with Cyclops's before coming in.
- You may not use anyone else's character in your bio without their permission. Ask before you post. Above all this includes Professor X; he is not an NPC in this game, and you may NOT use him in your bio until you have full permission from his player. Saying Xavier went to recruit your character is now not only a dealbreaker, but a bannable offense. You will not get the opportunity to change it. If the character you would like to use is not being played, you may not use them, although in some circumstances we may make small allowances in history, as long as it has been agreed upon with the admin before you post your bio. You may change your bio later when you update it to include other characters if you have RP'd and thus created history with them. If you are having difficulty contacting a player, staff is available by private message, email, and messengers, and we will get you a response. There are no excuses for abusing other players this way and no reason we should accept a bio from anyone who does.
- Do not contact the moderator by email or messenger to discuss why your bio was rejected or has not been accepted yet. The only place that will be discussed (and it may be discussed at length there, if you like) is the board. It is, however, acceptable to contact the moderator by email or messenger before you post your bio, if you'd like assistance.
- You may play a normal human or a mutant. That is it. No exceptions. No vampires, no werewolves, no elves, no fairies, no jedi, no wizards, no aliens. And no mutation work-arounds...we don't care if it was caused by gamma radiation, if it has fangs and drinks blood, it's a vampire.
- We no longer have a character limitation. If you are starting fresh, you may have one character, either canon or original, for a trial period of at least a few months before taking on a new one. After that time, you may contact the moderators and ask for more characters. The criteria used to determine whether to allow you one will be your writing ability, how much time you have on your hands, and how involved you are in the community. This is to both allow our core players the ability to take more roles if they can handle them, and to keep 'board-hoppers' from picking up a handful of canons and then skipping town.
- No free characters will be NPC'd, that is, played by other players not holding them.
- You may not 'move' or post for any character but your own without explicit permission from their player.
- Read the information and sticky notices on a section before you post there. Some forums have restrictions on breaking into threads or what can be done in them.
- Keep your threads in the right forums. These should be self-explanatory, but if you are unsure, please check with the moderator.
- If your thread moves to another location, post an OOC note at the bottom of your thread, noting where it relocated to.
- While there are adult themes in this game, the rating is R, not NC-17. Post accordingly. If you think you may be pushing the envelope, run it by the moderator first. Fanfiction with an NC-17 rating will be allowed, as long as a warning is posted in the topic.
- Posts should be sizable (typically at least 10 sentences). They should also be chock full of correct spellings and good grammar. While not all of us have Microsoft Word, there is a spell check on the board, and no excuse for an indecipherable post. Continued problems with mini-posts and poor spelling and grammar will result in warnings and ultimately, a ban.
- You must post at least once every seven days, or your bio will be deleted and your characters up for grabs. People continually doing the bare minimum will be asked to leave.
- Always post in the provided section for player alerts when you will have an extended absence (more than one week), so that your character is not freed or your bio deleted. If you are away more than you are here, you need to rethink your participation in the game. Also, please let us know when you will be leaving the RP, so that a replacement can be found or arrangements can be made to deal with your exit.
- Posts should be written as if you were writing a story, not like a real-time RPG. Use paragraphs. Do not use ** or anything else to denote action, write it out. Quotation marks surround speech, not colored font tags. Bold should only be used for emphasis, italics only for the speech of other characters, thoughts, the ever-popular flashback, or emphasis.
- On the bio line "Key" put down "hamster". So I know you actually glanced at the rules. This will change regularly so check back if you're submitting a new bio.
- Posts should be written in third person past-tense (She went to the window, not I go to the window.)
- It should go without saying, but: no killing other players' characters without explicit permission.
