Character Information:
Name: Remy LeBeau
Alias: Gambit
Occupation: Thief / Adventurer
Age: 27
Height: 6’ 2”
Build: Remy is athletic, his build resembling that of a tri-athlete rather than a football or basketball player.
Hair color/style: Auburn, longer on the top, shorter on the sides and back, it tends to flop down in front of his eyes, which can help to mask them.
Eye color: Red irises on black sclera
Detailed personal description: In general Remy could be best described as scruffy. He has a perpetual five o’clock shadow across his chiseled face, and his hair seems to be wildly out of control. His skin is permanently tanned from long hours on the streets of New Orleans. Remy will try and blend in to the crowd around him but his height and looks tend to make him stick out in most situations. When he isn’t on a job he can usually be found in t-shirts or polos, jeans or shorts. He’s comfortable with his physical appearance, and quite casual in most cases, some would say almost too casual, as he has no inhibition when it comes to encroaching on someone’s personal space especially if that someone is of the opposite sex.
Remy's uniform is head-to-toe black, a master thief's uniform. It's skintight, a black shirt and pants, and a type of hood from the neck of his shirt up to above his ears, cut away at his face. His gloves cover his middle and ring fingers, leaving the others exposed to charge objects through direct contact. He wears large knee high black boots that lace up, and most importantly of all, his brown trench coat, his signature. He's never without it. Inside he carries all the instruments of his trade--as a thief and an X-man--picks and a deck of cards, among other things.
Family: Remy was adopted by the late Jean-Luc LeBeau, former head of the Thieves Guild of New Orleans. Jean-Luc’s biological son, Henri LeBeau succeeded him and is now the head of the Guild. Henri and Remy share a close relationship, and consider themselves blood relatives.
Ability/Mutation: Remy has the power to take the potential energy stored in an object and convert it to kinetic energy thus “charging” that item with explosive results. He prefers to charge smaller objects, such as his ever-present playing cards, as the time required to charge them is greatly reduced and they are much easier for him to throw. The only real limitation to this ability is the time required to charge the object. The larger it is the more time it takes. Most charging takes place through direct skin contact. While Remy currently has excellent control of his powers this has not always been the case, and is due in fact to a reduction in his ability by Mr. Sinister at Remy’s request. At his full power he charge objects within his line of sight without contact, additionally he can charge organic matter.
It is believed that Remy also has a high-energy metabolism associated with his power; this has resulted in enhanced speed and agility and a constant need to be in motion, These secondary abilities are minor compared to other mutants known for such attributes.
Rumor has it that Remy might also have some kind of low-grade psionic abilities, the implication being that they are empathic in nature with an unknown strength. Remy himself chalks it up to being charming. It has also been suggested that this power gives him the ability to hypnotize people through his speech and body language. Concrete proof however is unavailable.
Weaknesses: Remy has all of the standard physical weaknesses of typical humans. He can also tend to be distracted emotionally and somewhat reckless. He carries a significant amount guilt on his shoulders due mainly to his role in the Morlock Massacre which causes him to skew his opinion of his own self-worth.
Personality: Outwardly, Remy is extremely charming, more than a little cocky, and somewhat mysterious, a combination that many women find irresistible, and Remy doesn't seem to mind. He does, however, have his secrets, and guards them very carefully. That usually means keeping his distance...whether he likes it or not.
Despite his rough looks Remy is the stereotypical Southern gentleman, he's polite and cordial which adds to his charm and can under most circumstances disarm people immediately. He will win people over simply by speaking with them for a few moments, telling jokes or complimenting. He is laid back and easy going, hiding his need for motion by shuffling his deck of cards, or rolling quarters across his knuckles. He's also a bit of a showboat; he has confidence in his abilities and his skills and won't hesitate to tell someone what he can do or what he's willing to try.
Remy's confidence is underscored by a deep-seated insecurity on a more personal level. Unshakably self-assured as a thief (or a lover, for that matter), Remy suffers from a lack of self-worth, haunted by a need for approval and affirmation. He often uses his considerable charm as a means to win such approval from the opposite sex, but is unable to give much of himself in return, wary of the inevitable rejection he thinks would come if all his secrets, his faults and failings, were laid bare. He falls in love easily, but rarely with any depth, enraptured for a while and moving on quickly before his preoccupation threatens his distance. The rare occasions when he does give his heart completely can be very painful for him and the person he cares for. He struggles to show his sincerity and still maintain his personal boundaries, almost always a losing battle. As such, he usually stumbles into impossible relationships with women who are somehow unattainable.
His need for more intimate companionship (and its internal conflict with his fears and sense of guilt) is not something he thinks about. Though he could probably benefit from it, Remy isn't very able at self-analyzation and rarely questions why he does anything. He can be impulsive and will act without forethought and often without afterthought. His philosophy of doing whatever seems to come next can lead him into trouble at times.
History: Remy doesn’t know where he was born or who his parents were, only that his first memories are of New Orleans, a life in the streets as a boy with a talent for picking tourist pockets in the French Quarter. When he was eight years old, he was apprehended lifting the wallet of Jean-Luc LeBeau, the head of the Thieves Guild. Amused (and perhaps a little impressed), Jean-Luc took Remy in, as his adopted son. Remy grew up alongside Jean-Luc’s son Henri, learning their trade as a thief. They quickly discovered that he was gifted, and eventually he became a part of the Guild. One day he would be a master thief, perhaps their best.
When he was 10, he already had a clear soft spot for damsels in distress, especially beautiful blonde ones. He met a girl his own age, Bella Donna Boudreaux, by stumbling into her troubles and rescuing her. Taken with her from the start, he was not the least bit dissuaded from being friends with her after he learned she was the daughter of the head of the Assassins Guild, rivals of the Thieves. As they grew older, the friendship became a romance, and eventually their families realized they had an opportunity to make peace through their children. At eighteen, it was arranged for Bella and Remy to marry. Despite loving each other deeply, both were nervous about it, Remy wondering if they were too young for such a big step, and Bella because she knew her brother Julien objected strongly to the union.
Even then, Remy believed there was blood on his hands. He had been the one to sponsor his cousin, Etienne, into the Guild, but Etienne had died under his care during a botched job. Remy’s guilt was immense, and though no one held him responsible, Remy made up for that by blaming himself. Although Bella’s love was his solace, that was taken away from him, on their wedding day. Julien Boudreaux refused to allow him to marry his sister, and tried to kill him. They fought, and Julien was killed instead. Again, Remy had caused someone to die, the brother of the woman he loved. He was banished from New Orleans. He left his city, and Bella Donna, behind, and went out into the world to ply the trade Jean-Luc had taught him.
His travels went around the globe, but eventually they brought him to Seattle. His powers, always a boon to him before, had begun to creep out of his control. He sought out the mutant geneticist, Nathaniel Essex, Sinister, for assistance. Sinister offered to trade his skills for Remy’s, and Remy agreed, not considering that he was making a deal with the devil. He wanted only to have his powers back at his command. Sinister operated on him, and Remy’s control was restored, but Sinister had some work for him to do in return. He asked Remy to assemble a team of mutants for his use, the Marauders, which Remy did without asking what Sinister wanted them for. He honestly didn’t want to know. The group Sinister had asked him to build was foul, to say the very least, and the less Remy had to do with them, the better he liked it. Sinister finally asked one last favor of him, to lead the Marauders down into the Morlock tunnels. In retrospect, Remy perhaps should have considered what Sinister and his Marauders would have wanted with the Morlocks, hideous mutants with limited powers, creatures Sinister thought were genetic failures. He did not. He took the Marauders to the Morlocks and intended to leave it at that, anything to be shut of Sinister at last. But then the killing began. The Marauders massacred the Morlocks. Remy was helpless to stop the bloodshed and was badly hurt when he tried to. He managed to save one, a little girl. He escaped with her, got her to safety, but almost died from his wounds. Later, he wished he had. His role in the Morlock Massacre became his darkest, most painful secret, one that haunted him ever after.
Remy was on the move again after that, eventually finding his way back to New York. He reestablished contact with the Thieves Guild and began operating with the New York branch. Henri, his foster brother and Guildmaster, offered him a position as the branch head, but Remy declined preferring to keep his options open and operating as second in command, and the resident master thief. It was in this position that he was hired to break into the home of Thomas Anderson, lead engineer for a covert government task known as Project: Wideawake.
Remy successfully broke in and copied several documents pertaining to the creation and development of a new line of Sentinels. At the time he had no idea what the information was and didn’t really care, a job was a job, upon meeting his client his opinions changed. The client was 17-year-old Lyssa Xavier, operating on her own to obtain the information for the X-Men. Remy was immediately surprised at the appearance and age of Lyssa as well as the nature of the documents. She convinced him to return to the mansion with her when she discovered that he was mutant, telling him that his services could be useful in fighting Project: Wideawake. Remy decided the opportunity to atone for the Morlock Massacre was too great to pass up and agreed to help her.
He has since spent the last two and half years working with the X-Men in their efforts to promote Charles Xavier’s Dream. While not fully integrated into the team, he has proven his usefulness on a number of occasions. He has disappeared from time to time without telling anyone why he’s leaving or where he’s going but always returns back to the mansion after a few short weeks. He’s also found himself in an on again off again relationship with the X-Man Rogue.
